It is situated in the southwest corner of the county, at Sec. 23 & 24, Twp. 51 N, R. 29 W on Z south of 210. The surveyors for the North Missouri Railroad from Moberly to Kansas City found that a straight line between these two points left Albany one mile to the north. For a station to load and unload goods, the company chose a location near the village which had developed naturally, bought land, and employed W. W. Orrick, a civil engineer of St. Charles to draw up a plat and gave his name to the town ... Orrick was incorporated in 1873, and the business men from Albany reluctantly followed suit ... Orrick has a good claim to being the location of the first gas war. A. M. Riffe, who owned a hardware store, put in gasoline pumps to compete with Standard Oil ... Mr. Riffe posted prices two cents a gallon below Standard. When Standard lowered its price so did he. When Standard lowered to a point where he could not make a profit he closed his pumps. When Standard raised he opened his pumps. It is reported that Standard sent agents to make a deal with him, but he refused to break the antitrust laws and Standard gave up the fight. Liberty Weekly Tribune Nov 28. 1879 ORRICK, Nov. 25--A co-operative steam saw mill is about being erected tow and a half miles east of Orrick, to be under the supervision of U. B. Burris of this place. There being a large extent of territory, the lumber of which has not as yet been manufactured, there is every prospect of the enterprise proving a successful one. Typhoid fever which has been raging the past few months in this and neighboring vicinities, is still spreading throughout the country. Several new cases are reported to-day, one proving fatal. Miss Mary Ralf, daughter of Dr. Ralf, of Albany, Mo., died on Sunday evening at 7 o'clock. She was an estimable young lady and the community feel a deep regret in her loss. 2.
