1973 Ray County History: In 1830 Joshua and Gracy Leakey homesteaded land northeast of Hardin, and 1/4 acre was set aside by deed for a cemetery. Joshua Leakey was buried there in 1853; Gracy in 1874. They lost a son John, who was buried before them; it is thought burial in the cemetery began in 1850. Joshua Leakey's old stone has a Masonic emblem. The Leakeys haven't owned the farm since about 1935. Fletcher and Margaret (Leakey) Salyer, Waverly, Missouri placed a stone for her grandfather, J. J. Leakey in 1971. They plan to put an historical marker there for her great-grandfather Joshua Leakey and to re-set other stones. This land was once an orchard. Mr. and Mrs. Salyer keep the cemetery mowed; have put up a new fence; planted dogwoods, Japanese maples, a smoke tree, iris and peonies to beautify the grounds. DAR Index: located 1/2 mile south of Route JJ and Route AA on north County Line Road. Cemetery is 6/10 miles back in land. Alfred & Sandy McKemy recorded both cemeteries in their book Cemeteries of Crooked River Township and the names in each are different. Contact David Leakey of Hardin |
