About Ray County, Missouri Cemetery Records, Volume I-III Collection of cemetery records from Ray County, Missouri. This collection of cemetery records adds to the growing number of databases in the Ellsberry Collection. The database was compiled by long-time researcher, school teacher, and professional genealogist Elizabeth Ellsberry. These cemetery records contain the name of the deceased and his or her relatives, birth date, and death date, as well as age, when given. The database includes more than 5,300 entries. The following cemeteries are included in the database: Antioch Cemetery Belt Cemetery Bethel Cemetery Clark Cemetery Hardin Cemetery Holder Cemetery Kincaid Cemetery Leakey Cemetery Liberty Cemetery Linvill Cemetery Little Union Cemetery McVeigh Cemetery Millville Community Cemetery New Hope Cemetery Penniston Cemetery Petree Cemetery Petty Cemetery Pleasant Hill Cemetery Rainwater Cemetery Smith Cemetery Sylar Cemetery Teegarden Cemetery Tinney Grove Cemetery Van Bebrer [VanBebber] Cemetery Wakenda Cemetery. Yoakum Cemetery Ms. Ellsberry began genealogical publication in 1958, when she published her own family history, The Warrens and You. In researching her own family, she found that libraries needed additional information from cemetery records, wills, land records, probate records, census records, etc., to help people with their family history. Ellsberry decided that she wanted to help by publishing books that contained solid genealogical data. She taught school for 34 years, but on weekends and summer vacation, she would travel around to different courthouses and cemeteries, recording the information she found. She also corresponded with several researchers and helped them in their research. Ellsberry self-published more than 300 books, and most of them are available for sale. Most of the compilation of these books took place between 1958 and into the 1970s, so the recorded information should include the cemetery and/or courthouse records of that time period. The cemetery is located on West Main Street in Richmond, Missouri. Sunny Slope lies west of Richmond Cemetery. There is one joint entrance and exit road for Sunny Slope. The plot map divides the cemetery into five sections. There is a northwest section, two "island" sections, a section that encompasses the central north and west, south to West Main Street, and a southwest section. There is a large plot map in the Genealogical Library at the Ray County Museum, 901 W. Royle Street, in Richmond, which may be used to locate burial lots. This listing used the survey of tombstones completed by Pauline Brown and Colleen Crowley in 1986. Marsha Young completed an independent survey by sections and lot numbers in 1989. The second survey included only the year of death and did not provide a birth date or the full date of death if on the stone. However, the listing of the lot numbers was quite valuable to this survey. These two databases were combined. Then Thurman Funeral Home records were used to verify death dates and to add the date of death when there was only a year of death or no death on a stone. The letter "T" after the date of death identifies records that use the Thurman date of death. The entire cemetery was walked to verify the old records and to add new stones for more recent burials. Lot numbers were checked against the previous survey. Some stones have names of people who are still living. No attempt was made to determine whether people with no death date were living or not. The complete listing, including lot numbers, is available at the Ray County Museum Genealogical Library. There are records where no stone could be found. Some of these are from the two previous surveys and some are Thurman records for Sunny Slope. The names were maintained in these records, but a notation is made that no stone found. This database has been completed using a word processing system and it can be easily updated. Please provide corrections to the Ray County Genealogical Library. File Format: name sc. Some of these are from the two previous surveys and some are Thurman records for Sunny Slope. The names were maintained in these records, but a notation is made that no stone found. The Missouri Death Certificate Database, containing death records created after 1910 and over 50 years old, makes that information available online through a searchable index that links to a digitized image of the original death certificate. The index can be searched by first name and last name, county, and by year and month. Once a name is selected, a digitized image of the original certificate can be retrieved. This is an ongoing project and additional records will be added as they are transcribed and imaged. If the image of the certificate is not yet available researchers can request a photocopy of the certificate by contacting the Archives Reference Desk . Ray County, Missouri Marriage and Will Records. Chillicothe, MO, USA: Elizabeth Prather Ellsberry, c1965. About Ray County, Missouri Marriages (1820-50) and Wills (1824-49) Collection of marriage and will records for Ray County, Missouri. This database is a collection of Missouri marriages and wills compiled by long-time genealogical researcher Elizabeth Prather Ellsberry. It includes various marriage and will records from Ray County, Missouri. The marriage records date from 1820 to 1850 and contain the names of both bride and groom and the wedding date. The will records date from 1824 to 1849 and contain (usually) the name of the testator, the probate date, and names of heirs and witnesses. Ms. Woodruff issn 0276-1637 The list was sorted alphabetically for ease of locating names. The number on the left indicates the order in which the name appeared on the original list. Joan Graham Atkinson has volunteered to do lookups in this book. From the book: The names listed below were copied from the original record in the Assessor's Office in the Ray County Court House at Richmond. On the back of the first page was the following notation in handwriting which indicated that it had been made many years ago: "Assessor's List, but for what year - does not say - supposed for 1821." Undoubtedly it was for that year since the list was signed by Zadoc Martin, Assessor of Ray Co., and according to county records he was assessor only from April, 1821, to January, 1822. At the time of this tax list, 1821, Ray County covered all of the areas now included in the counties of Clay, Carroll, Clinton, DeKalb, Gentry, Worth, Caldwell, Daviess, Harrison, Livingston, Grundy and Mercer. The assessment was against all property, Real Estate and Personal, including slaves, horses, cattle, jewelry, etc. The notation "unmarried" was made opposite the names of single men and $1.00 assessment valuation was added to each. In this list of names (*) indicates "unmarried". ******************************************************* 01 - X101 Hardin News February 22, 1906*** Febuary 22, 1906 The Hardin News GE Kelso Editor Papers from Hardin, MO, from February 1906 to February 1907. And small things about people from the next county but well known there. This paper was printed only once a week but three of the four pages seem to be local news. The fourth is state and national. Quite a large article about Alice Roosevelt's whitehouse wedding. The local ads are neat too, who worked at the bank or store. Carol has offered to transcribe the newspaper clippings for contribution to the Ray County Archives. The War of 1812 was a serious threat to settlements along the Missouri River corridor. Indian attacks, primarily the work of the Sac and Fox tribes that were instigated by the British, encouraged Missourians to take up arms in the war. The British outposts supplied Indian tribes with guns and ammunition, causing trouble on the Missouri frontier. The attacks were in response to western land hunger. The constant pressure on the federal government to open new lands for American settlers repeatedly forced or persuaded Native American tribes to sign treaties giving over more of their land each year. Missouri territorial officials organized and raised several companies of rangers. There were no major battles in the territory. Fighting was characterized by a series of Indian raids, skirmishes, and atrocities. Almost all of these took place in the areas north of the Missouri River, either in the Boon's Lick region or along the Missouri and upper Mississippi rivers. During this period, there were two federal forts in Missouri Territory: Fort Bellefontaine and Fort Osage. The Treaty of Ghent, ending the War of 1812, was signed on Christmas Day in 1814. By 1816, significant Indian resistance to white settlers in Missouri was at an end. ******************************************************* 01 - Y102 Pensioners on the Roll 1883*** Ray County, Missouri Military Records: 1883 Pensioners on the Roll The U.S. Congress directed the Pension Office to prepare a listing of individuals receiving pensions for war service. The Pension Office produced a list called "Pensioners on the Roll" as of January 1, 1883. The Roll apparently contained all pensioners, although only a small portion is presently online. The pensioners were primarily Union veterans from the Civil War and survivors of the War of 1812 but also included other service as well. In addition to the veterans themselves, family members receiving pensions based on said service were also included. Pensioners on the Roll was prepared from the official government records of the time, so this listing is likely to be one of the most complete and accurate records of the time. Although they are records of the Union Army, they were associated with Confederate records in the War Department because they relate, in part, to Confederate citizens and sympathizers. The National Archives refers to this collection as Union Provost Marshals' File of Papers Relating to Individual Citizens. This national collection is three hundred rolls of microfilm documents, 1861-1866. The online database created by the Missouri State Archives is an index of the Missouri portion of the collection. There are similar documents that refer to more than one citizen, Union Provost Marshals' File of Papers Relating to Two or More Civilians this latter collection, however, is not represented in the Missouri State Archives index. The microfilm collection contains thousands of pages of documents detailing the way the provost marshal affected the lives of Missouri citizens who came into contact with the Union Army. The office of provost marshal generated much paperwork which offers a unique look at a state divided in loyalty and beliefs, and the war society that resulted. Far from being solely a resource for military research, the provost marshal papers provide information about the role of women during the war, its effect on Missouri's slavery institution, and the difficulties experienced by war refugees. United States troops were sent to carry out the order, but the tribe successfully defied the federal government. The United States government asked Missouri to furnish troops to fight the Seminole Indians in Florida, requesting two regiments of mounted volunteers, a total of 600 men. U.S. Senator Thomas Hart Benton stated, "Missourians will go wherever their services are needed." Colonel Richard Gentry and his troops departed for Florida in October 1837. The first regiment consisted primarily of Boone County residents, although there were also volunteers from Callaway, Chariton, Ray, Howard, and Jackson counties. Four companies of a second regiment were enlisted and attached to the first; two of the companies were composed of men from the Delaware and Osage tribes, who served as scouts and spies. From Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, the group sailed down the Mississippi River to New Orleans, then crossed the Gulf of Mexico to Tampa Bay. The regiments arrived in Florida on November 15; then, they marched through swamps to Lake Okeechobee. The Battle of Okeechobee began on Christmas Day in 1837. About 138 soldiers, mostly Missourians and including Colonel Gentry, were killed or wounded in that battle, which saw the Seminole tribe driven back. Missouri troops returned home in early 1838 and disbanded. Later reports of the cowardice of the Missouri troops at the Battle of Okeechobee stirred controversy and resulted in a federal investigation. ******************************************************* 01 - Y107 Ray County Soldiers in the Mexican War*** Source: Ray County Chapters, Articles from the "Richmond Missourian", volume 2 -1931, p 84-85. http://ray.mogenweb.org/military/mexicanwar_soldiers.htm Mexican War, 1846-1848 Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836. The United States quickly recognized the Republic of Texas, but did not admit Texas as a state, due to controversy over slavery expansion. By 1844, though, annexation negotiations began, despite fear of war with Mexico over the issue. Texas was formally admitted to the Union in December 1845. Skirmishes began in the spring of 1846 between General Zachary Taylor's troops, stationed on a disputed strip of land between the Rio Grande and the Nueces rivers, and Mexican troops gathering at the border, intending to invade Texas. In April 1846, the Mexican government declared war; the United States Congress passed a war resolution on May 11, 1846, authorizing the president to call up 50,000 troops and appropriating $10 million for the war effort. General E.P. Gaines, the officer in charge at New Orleans, feared an imminent Mexican invasion and requested troops from western states. Missouri sent 650 volunteers, but since Gaines was not authorized to raise the troops, his order was overruled and the men sent home. This regiment was known as the "St. Louis Legion." Governor John C. Edwards officially called for volunteers in May 1846; over 1,350 Missourians answered. Eight mounted companies were formed, each consisting of 856 men. Jackson, Lafayette, Clay, Saline, Franklin, Cole, Howard, and Callaway counties each fostered one company, known respectively as Companies A through H. Men from Cole and Platte counties made up a battalion of infantry numbering 145 men; St. Louis provided a battalion of light artillery of two companies (250 men). These troops, and the First Dragoons of the U.S. Army, made up the Army of the West, serving under General Stephen W. Kearny. Colonel Alexander Doniphan was selected as second in command. After Kearny turned west toward California, Doniphan led the troops to play a major role in several victories in northern Mexico. Missouri also furnished other troops, including the Second Missouri Mounted Volunteers and a separate battalion of mounted troops. They arrived in Mexico in September 1846 and were followed in July 1847 by the Third Regiment of Missouri Mounted Volunteers. ******************************************************* 01 - Y108 Casualties in WWIII*** Ray County, Missouri World War II Casualties Army and Air Force source: http://www.accessgenealogy.com/worldwar/missouri/ray1.htm File Format: Name source code : Y108 (WWII Casualties) id : identification # rank: com. comments (see below for abbreviations) Source: WWII Casualties Grade Key Abbr.
